Topic:SHRIMPS IN A COMMUNITY TANK OR NOT ?
I will start this discussion with my personal observation. Shrimps for me are an integral part of the planted tanks because they are highly active cleaning crew. I have snails for the same reason btw. So now I have to decide whether I can add fishes along with them ? The best way to find that out is to actually keep shrimps in a Community Tank. By that I mean a tank where there are multiple type of fishes/livestock.
But when you do that please do not go for large fishes for whom shrimps are their natural food. You may try with fishes who have a small mouth to gobble down shrimps. For example Rasboras, Zebras, Tetras, Corydoras and many more.
Otocinclus are shrimp safe because they are pure herbivores who eat only algae, bio-film or algae based food. Please share with us if you know other similar shrimp safe species as well. Even Shrimps realise after a point that otos are harmless so they roam around freely in their presence. It is very important to have a thick moss bush or dense planted area in a community tank with shrimps to hide. Otherwise you may not see shrimps reproducing. Not everyone wants to breed shrimps and not every shrimp breed in our planted tanks. So incase of a Community Tank Rednose and Amano are good options. Even the Native Shrimps which we find at Galiff at times are good for a Community Tank because they camouflage with the surrounding !!
Looking forward to your tank photos and comments.Happy Shrimp Keeping !!
